Overview

1. The Department of Public Health Dentistry at Army College of Dental Sciences-Secunderabad-87was established in 2003.The subject “Public Health Dentistry “is taught in 3rd and 4th year BDS course. Public health dentistry is a subject designed to impart and explore the dental needs by the students in a particular group of population. The students are exposed to the general public dental needs, certain groups by participating in camps. Rural and urban camps are conducted regularly. The students are involved to learn and identify the dental problems in a group and thus allowing them to explore the preventive measures and courses and also to conduct research and surveys.

2. While imparting social responsibility pertaining to dental needs and prevention of a particular group, or population, students are also trained to do the basic treatments. Fully equipped mobile dental van is another facility available in which students carry out the treatments. Students are encouraged to participate in various general competitive programs like debates, eassy writing and posters. The college has established Tobacco Cessation Counselling centre in the department to train students in identifying smokers and tobacco chewers for counselling to quit the habit after thorough clinical analysis. Further follow up and nicotine replacement therapy is also a part of training imparted to students

3. Many programs are conducted involving students for better exposure and social responsibility.

4. The following programs such as:

  • World no tobacco day
  • Oral cancer awareness program
  • Dental awareness, screening and treatment programs in rural and urban areas, slums, schools, old age homes, orphanages etc are the main exposure areas.
  • Screening and treatments are conducted in institutes for mentally, physically disabled.
  • Many govt schools in and around ACDS are adopted for free treatments.
  • General awareness programs like Vigilance awareness week, gender desensitization, NSS activities, International yoga day, Communal harmony campaign week etc are enthusiastically conducted involving students and staff.

Infrastructure

The Department is equipped with dental chairs and instruments to carry out basic treatments and to conduct camps in community by and large.

The Mobile Dental van is fully equipped with two Dental chairs with required accessories and arrangements to reach the remote and unreached people.

There is also provision of two Compact portable Dental chairs with compressor and other attachments and a portable x-ray unit to conduct camps.

The Dental Health educational charts, Projector to conduct Dental Health educational and motivational programmes.

The Dental Health and awareness museum is also managed and upgraded on regular basis.
