Department of ORTHODONTICS AND DENTOFACIAL ORTHOPAEDICS

Overview

Orthodontics is the science of correction of irregular teeth and jaws. It has the unique distinction of being dentistry’s first specialty. The Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics was established as a specialized unit at ACDS way back in 2001 at inception. The department was initially located in a room at the old campus location at Mercury Lines, Trimulgherry, Secunderabad prior to moving into the spacious current location in May 2003.

Post graduate training in Orthodontics( MDS) started in the year 2012 with 5batches of students completing the course and 3 currently in training. Orthodontics is taught at the undergraduate level in the 3rd and 4th years of training. Thirteen batches of BDS students have completed their dental training at ACDS and are pursuing their profession in all parts of the country and abroad.

Orthodontics as a specialty is the most sought after due to the ability of an orthodontist to positively influence growth and development and bring about significant facial and dental changes in their patients. The period of post graduate training is 3 years and is rigorous. ACDS as an institution, has been blessed with an abundant number of patients from all walks of life visiting the institution for their dental treatment. Post graduate trainees are able to diagnose and treat a large number of malocclusions using the latest and best mechanotherapies.

Treatment of all dental and skeletal malocclusions is undertaken in the department with patients ranging in ages between 8 and 65 years. The latest treatment modalities including Damon self ligation, clear aligners, orthodontic implants and orthognathic surgical procedures are undertaken routinely. The department has highly trained and efficient faculty in addition to the latest equipment in order to provide the best possible treatment to a large segment of the population. Some needy patients are also treated free of cost. The department also looks after the orthodontic needs of the community by being a part of regular dental screening camps and improving awareness of orthodontic problems.

Post graduate trainees undertake a wide variety of treatment procedures, do active research as a part of their curriculum, attend national and international conferences, seminars and workshops as part of overall development. Additionally, the faculty and students also publish their research findings and clinical work in journals of national and international repute. The mission of the department is to generate, spread knowledge and serve the community at large in the best possible way by being a center of excellence. The vision is to advance orthodontic treatment and health by creating and fostering leaders in clinical care, research and education who strive for eminence by overall integration of knowledge encompassing multiple disciplines.
